ANASTACIA DIAGNOSIS CONFIRMED AS DUCTAL CARCINOMA IN SITU (DCIS)

On Monday, February 10th (2003) Anastacia underwent a 7-hour surgical procedure to remove the cancer and to reconstruct her breast. Doctor's categorized the operation as a success and subsequent testing revealed that the singer's early detection had in fact saved her life. “Although what Anastacia has is serious, she is very lucky,” said Anastacia's surgeon, Dr. Alexander Swistel. “Due to the aggressive nature of her cancer, she was month's away from a more immediate life-threatening condition. However, her prognosis is good, as are her spirits, which figures into any patient's successful recovery.” After being released after 2 days in the hospital the singer recuperated at home under the supervision of a private nurse. Radiation therapy has been recommended and Anastacia will begin the 6-week process in the coming weeks. “My will, my faith and my body have been challenged,” said Anastacia. “But make no mistake, my heart is strong and my resolve to fight will never be broken. To all the people that have reached out to wish me well, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she continued. “And in return, if there is anything that I've learned from this experience it is to get a mammogram early. Even if not covered by insurance, give up that pair of shoes, don't go out for that expensive dinner – get a mammogram.”
